Once the first three reading sections are completed, the class is taken through a unit on actual character sketch creation. I use Twilight Zone episodes, some professional character sketches, and some composition book preliminary work.
After the next three reading are completed, I use similar techniques mentioned above to ready the students for a short story assignment based on some event in their recent lives.
I spend much time talking about the need for involvement in society and how Gordon has realized that he couldn't shirk that duty. The thrust of the book, evolving toward universal responsibility, obvious in the last two readings, prepares students to complete the final which is an essay directed to this purpose.
