The Postman provides high school students practice in recognizing and creating three types of writing: character sketch, narrative, and thematic development.
The Postman is the dream of civilization and struggle of Gordon Krantz to shoulder the responsibility that he must bear to live the dream. In spite of himself, Krantz must be a founder of the new government even though that task imposes huge risks and personal sacrifice.
I divide the novel into eight readings of about 40 pages each. The first three readings define Gordon's character; the second three describe the impending action against the Holnists; the last two provide the climax of the novel allowing the reader to grasp the theme of personal involvement with civilization.
