The conclusion properly appears when all is most desparate. The resolution comes quickly and then Gordon and Powhatan discuss the responsibilities of being a citizen. In a letter to Mrs. Thompson, Gordon reflects over his Oregon saga before he sets his sights on other frontiers that need to be joined with the civilization he has become a founder of.
