This is intended as a collaborative exercise. The tabloid is two pages, front-back. I created the template in PageMaker, and give the students a blank copy of the paper. In groups of four of five they must divide the stories, offer some pictures for the designated spots, and produce the finished product. Originally I let them enter on a blank template and draw the pictures. Then I tried them on computers and found that they wrote much more and were able to fill the columns with some creative journalism.
The paper is really a statement of Gordon's character; at least that is its intent. Thus, it is another subtle way of getting students some introductory work at creating a character sketch which I have them do before they return to the novel.
