The following graphics of handouts that I use, can be copied off the net, printed and xeroxed, or used as patterns for your own creations. Although these are shown as single pages, I normally create handouts that are single sheets either folded to become four-page-half-sheet brochures or tri-folds. I have found that distributing assignments on colored paper (much cheaper than color printing) is novel enough to create further interest.
Each of these examples was originally created in Illustrator® 7.0 and exported to a gif file. PageMaker® can just as easily be used. Any graphic or DTP program offers the facility to create intriguing handouts.
The Martian Chronicles by Ray Bradbury is one option of three novels used as core reading for a one semester composition class. The novel is used to exemplify character, narrative, and theme. (The other two novels are The Postman [http://postman.cosmic.org] by David Brin and A Canticle for Leibowitz by Walter Miller, Jr. [the next site curriculum I plan].)
The first three assignments are directed to character sketch (the unit is filled out by other readings and videos) and the first tabloid is intended to impress students with the characters of the novel and the observable personalities they demonstrate.
The second three assignments are directed to narrative and developed in a similar manner to character sketch.
The last two assignments are direct to recognition of theme as it is presented and developed through the resolution of the novel. The optional finals (found from their own link) give an opportunity to test for three different purposes.
