This is a totally personal answer. The movie implies that David had a dream which predicted what was going to happen. Because while he was about to fall asleep the thunderstorm noise let him look outside the window and he say the flying saucer again. Of course it might be a second recurring dream. Dreams do sometimes repeat themselves.
